Lisa Jelle, Flute

Lisa Jelle is Professor of Flute and Head of the Instrumental Area at Capital University, Principal Flute of the Central Ohio Symphony and the Ashland Symphony, Piccolo with the Lancaster Festival Orchestra, and an Associate Musician with the Columbus Symphony.  She also enjoys frequent solo performances with Vaughn Wiester’s Famous Jazz Orchestra, and performed Mariano Morales’ jazzy Concerto for Flute and Orchestra with the Central Ohio Symphony in 2022.   A former member of the Honolulu Symphony, the Austin Symphony, and the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, Lisa was a member of the Breckenridge Music Festival Chamber Orchestra in her native Colorado for 20 summers.  

Dr. Jelle has released four CDs: Bolling and Beyond: Jazz-Inspired Flute (2019); A Chamber Jazz Christmas (2016); Mark Flugge Remembered: Jazz Originals & Standards (2015); and Waltz into Madness (2012).  The CDs feature compositions by/with her late husband, jazz pianist Mark Flugge, as well as with Capital’s QuintEssential Winds faculty woodwind quintet,  the PANdemonium4 Flute Quartet, the Inspirare Duo, and the Famous Jazz Orchestra. She may be heard as well on the Capstone release Resonant Edges, performing Paul Osterfield's "Jagged Edges" on piccolo, with pianist Diane Frazer. 

In 2012-2013, Lisa led a consortium of professional flutists in commissioning and premiering Silver Fantasy for Solo Flute and Symphonic Winds by Dr. Paul Osterfield. She performed with Karl F. Kraber and PANdemonium4 at recent National Flute Association Annual Conventions in Phoenix, Chicago, Orlando, and Minneapolis, as well as with Ali Ryerson and the NFA Jazz Flute Big Band in D.C.  Three international performance and teaching tours were recently given in Germany, Hungary, and England. 

Lisa is Director of the 501(c)3 nonprofit Mark Flugge Memorial Fund, which commissions new arrangements of Mark's compositions, sponsors the Capital University Mark Flugge Jazz Award, and coordinates the Annual Mark Flugge Tribute Jazz Concert.   Dr. Jelle's teachers include Leone Buyse, Walfrid Kujala, Anne Diener Zenter, and Karl F. Kraber.  Her degrees are from Rice University, The  University of Texas at Austin, and the University of Northern Colorado.
